Amir Engel received his PhD from Stanford University in 2011. His dissertation is a intellectual biography of the renowned Kabbalah Jewish German and Israeli scholar Gershom Scholem. Currently he is a research fellow at the Martin Buber Professur für Jüdische Religionsphilosophie, Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main. His current project seeks to describe the history of the construction of the category “Jewish mysticism” as it emerged in the first half of the 20th century from its sources in the European culture.
