Orientalist scholarship and International politics in the Age of German Empire. Life, Career and Oeuvre of Friedrich Rosen, 1856-1935
Amir Heinitz's dissertation looks at the relationship of Oriental studies and Orient politics during the German Kaiserreich. The German diplomat, orientalist and later foreign minister Friedrich Rosen (1856-1935) serves as key actor and focal point of a history traversing twelve cities on three continents. How power and knowledge relate is investigated in chapters on the translation of Persian poetry as a means of cultural understanding, Urdu at the court of the British viceroy in India, Orientalist congresses in northern climes, jihad in German foreign policy, and cultural sensitivity in high-level political negotiations. Amir pursues his Ph.D. at the Technical University Berlin.
