The German origins of Hebrew typography in the 20th century: Rafael Frank and Henri Friedlaender
Nitzan Chelouche (she/her) is a PhD candidate at the DAAD Center for German Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her research examines the emergence of modern Hebrew type design in Germany in the first half of the twentieth century. She draws upon her training as a graphic designer to investigate the theoretical foundations of Hebrew type design in the writings of Rafael Frank, Henri Friedlaender, Josef Kaplan, Ismar David, Eliyahu Koren and Moshe Spitzer. Nitzan works to promote design discourse and methods within a traditional research environment and to address the scholarly gap in Hebrew typography research.
