DR SYBILLE STEINBACHER (Friedrich Schiller University, Jena)
Dr Sybille Steinbacher is assistant lecturer/research associate in Modern History at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany. From 1999 to 2002, she worked for the Unabhängige Historische Kommission zur Erforschung der Geschichte des Hauses Bertelsmann im Dritten Reich (Independent Historical Commission for Research into the history of the publishing house Bertelsmann in Nazi-Germany). From 2004-2005 she was a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for European Studies, Harvard University.
Dr Steinbacher has written several books on the social life and the history of the Nazi concentration camps, including “Musterstadt” Auschwitz. Germanisierungspolitik und Judenmord in Oberschlesien (‘Model Town’ Auschwitz. Politics of Germanisation and the Holocaust in Upper Silesia) (2000), and Dachau - die Stadt und das Konzentrationslager in der NS-Zeit: die Untersuchung einer Nachbarschaft (Dachau - the Town and the Concentration Camp under National Socialism: the Examination of a Neighbourhood) (1994). Her most recent publication Auschwitz: A History (2005), has been translated into English, Italian and Dutch.
