The New Generation Group invites you to its third annual conference: Voice, Narrative, and (Self-)Representation, held at UCL on Monday 11 May 2026.
This theme confronts a central question in Jewish Studies: who gets to speak, who tells their story, and who listens? This conference explores how Jews and Jewish communities have expressed themselves – and how they have been represented, sympathetically, indifferently, or negatively, by others.
The day features four panels:
• Local archives and British Jewish communities
• Museums, performance, and public memory
• Biography, life-writing, and self-fashioning
• Text, translation, and religious voice
The day concludes with a keynote lecture by Paris Chronakis: Merchants, Jews, Greeks: Jewish identities from the Ottoman Empire to the Greek nation-state, 1876–1922, followed by a reception.
The provisional programme can be found here.
Organised by the New Generation Group with the generous support of the Jewish Historical Society of England, in cooperation with UCL
