About the Role:
The Leo Baeck Institute London is seeking a motivated and self-starting individual to join our small but dynamic team as Programme and Development Officer. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the success of a leading academic institute dedicated to the study of German-Jewish history, culture, and thought.
Working closely with the Director, you will play a central role in supporting the Institute’s mission by coordinating academic events, identifying and pursuing fundraising opportunities, and fostering relationships with partners and stakeholders in the UK and abroad. This position offers a chance to engage with high-level academic projects, promote the Institute’s work to a wide audience, and help shape its future development.
Key Responsibilities:
Academic Events Coordination
- Assist in the conceptualisation, planning, and execution of academic events such as conferences, lectures, seminars, and workshops, ensuring they align with the Institute’s mission and standards.
- Provide on-the-day support for events, including liaising with participants and guests, and attending post-event functions.
Fundraising & Development
- Identify and research funding opportunities from grant-making bodies, trusts, foundations, and other sources, ensuring alignment with the Institute’s goals and priorities.
- Draft, edit, and coordinate the submission of funding proposals, grant applications, and sponsorship requests in collaboration with the Director and relevant team members.
- Maintain a database of funding opportunities and deadlines, and track the progress of applications.
- Support the Director and the Executive Board in cultivating relationships with potential donors and stakeholders, preparing briefing materials, and organising meetings or events related to fundraising.
Networking & Partnerships
- Build and maintain strong relationships with academic institutions, researchers, and cultural organisations in the UK, Europe, North America, and Israel.
- Represent the Institute at relevant academic and cultural events, conferences, and meetings, promoting its activities and initiatives.
- Identify opportunities for partnerships, joint ventures, and collaborative projects that align with the Institute’s strategic priorities.
- Act as a point of contact for stakeholders, responding to queries, coordinating communication, and ensuring professional engagement.
About You:
We are looking for an organised and enthusiastic individual who is eager to gain hands-on experience in the management of a renowned academic institute. The ideal candidate will:
- Hold a Master’s degree (or a BA degree with relevant professional experience), with a strong interest in history, German-Jewish studies, or related fields.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently with limited supervision, including flexibility to work outside normal office hours when necessary, and remotely, with the expectation of attending scheduled in-person engagements.
- Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with academics, trustees, and other stakeholders.
- Have an excellent working knowledge of German (reading and writing), as some projects will involve correspondence in German.
- Be empathetic to the Institute’s mission, with an interest in the preservation and promotion of German-Jewish scholarship and heritage.
- Demonstrate strong organisational skills and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Have good interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to teamwork.
What We Offer:
- A competitive pro-rata salary.
- 5 weeks of holiday (pro-rata).
- Statutory Sick Pay and Pension.
- The opportunity to work in the heart of Bloomsbury, alongside leading scholars and cultural organisations.
