Outsider . Freud
(Yair Qedar, Israel/Austria/Germany, 2025)
Outsider. Freud offers an unconventional portrait of Sigmund Freud, exploring his life and work through the lens of his Jewish identity and his experience of being an outsider. Structured in four movements – The Jew, Freud Becomes Freud, Love/Death and Exile – the film combines archival footage and letters, read by Austrian actor Karl Markovics, with animation, dream sequences and reflections from leading psychoanalysts and Freud scholars. It explores Freud’s experiences of marginalisation as a Jew in Vienna, the impact of the rise of Nazism and his eventual exile, while considering how these experiences shaped both his personal life and his thinking. Poetic and visually inventive, the film offers a distinctive perspective on Freud’s legacy and on the relationship between psychoanalysis, Judaism and the experience of exclusion.
The film has been exceptionally well received internationally, winning 15 awards and appearing at festivals and screenings in more than 20 countries. It was also awarded the prestigious 2025 Gradiva Award for Best Documentary.
