The Leo Baeck Institute London is delighted to announce a new addition to our library: Displaced at Home: Ein Ort, den man zuhause nennt, the catalogue accompanying the Sara Nussbaum Zentrum für Jüdisches Leben’s acclaimed exhibition on 20th-century Jewish life in Kassel.

Curated by Gabriela Katz and published by Julius Dalberg Verlag, this volume captures the exhibition that opened in June last year, exploring ‘home’ through the experiences of Kassel’s Jewish community – from post-World War I integration, through rising antisemitism, flight, deportation, and Displaced Persons camps, to survivors’ return in 2000 for the new synagogue’s dedication. Key elements include Jewish resistance stories, like the Ritchie Boys and Monuments Men, alongside powerful visitor testimonials praising its emotional depth and message: #niewiederistjetzt (#NeverAgainIsNow).

The book features an article on the LBI’s Library of Lost Books exhibit, ‘History is Not Yet Written!’ by former LBI Deputy Director Kinga Bloch which spotlights the Library of Lost Books project, reviving the legacy of Berlin’s Higher Institute for Jewish Studies (1872–1942) – once home to Leo Baeck, Regina Jonas, and Franz Rosenzweig.

This generous donation strengthens our shared commitment to tracing Jewish heritage, memory, and the fight against antisemitism. We extend heartfelt thanks to the Sara Nussbaum Zentrum for including our work and enriching LBI London’s collections.
