After the Catastrophe: Yekkes in Israel and Their Relationships with Germany, 1945-1995 (working title)

This research project investigates the attitudes of former German Jews living in Israel - commonly referred to as Yekkes - toward Germany in the aftermath of the Shoah, as well as their evolving relationships with post-Nazi German society. Spanning the period from the end of the Second World War to the 1990s, the study explores how Yekkes perceived and engaged with Germany and Germans, and how they negotiated and narrated both their personal experiences and broader German-Jewish histories within these relations. The project approaches these questions through the prism of contacts that emerged within the broader framework of remembering and writing the history of German Jewry - two different but deeply interwoven fields. Through a series of case studies-each situated within its specific social and historical constellation-the study analyzes the entanglements between individual relational dynamics and the historiography of German-Jewish history.
