Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story (2017) explores the multifaceted life of the Austrian-Jewish actress Hedy Lamarr, once known as the ‘the most beautiful woman in the world’. The star, who is said to have inspired the appearance of iconic characters such as Disney’s Snow White and Batwoman, described herself as an enfant terrible and was a woman of many talents.
Originating from a bourgeois German-speaking Jewish family in Vienna, she escaped both the Nazis and her existence as a trophy wife in the 1930s by joining Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to become a Hollywood star. Whilst her audience’s imagination was captivated by her ravishing beauty, her scandalous private life, and the provocative movies she had made in Europe prior to her escape, Hedy Lamarr’s involvement in the invention of the groundbreaking frequency hopping technology in the 1940s was largely overlooked.
This film rediscovers Hollywood wild-child, Hedy Lamarr, not only as an actress but as the brilliant mind who co-invented the 1940s wireless technology that is the basis for today’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies.
