I’ll Be Frank

Follow Aaron, the documentary’s young Australian director, on his poignant journey of discovery through the past after regaining the German citizenship that was taken from his grandfather by the Nazis. Guided by his Opa’s animated memories, Aaron begins to trace his family’s history as he establishes his own connection to the place they once called home. His new life in Germany leads him to uncover a heritage left behind by his family long ago and the trauma long hidden under the surface of their identity. Join Aaron as he shares his experience as a young Jewish person reclaiming his family’s lost German identity and confronting the events that led to it.
I’ll Be Frank is an animated documentary directed by Australian Aaron Lucas, who previously worked on several short films and music videos. The film premiered at the Rhode Island International Film Festival, where it won first prize at the Hearts, Minds, Soul Awards. It was nominated for Best Documentary / Factual Single at the Australian International Documentary Conference 2023 the following year and was subsequently screened on the Australian TV network SBS. Aaron Lucas has also taken the film to many different audiences around Germany, engaging them in the history of Jewish families that fled from Europe and the stories of their descendants who have chosen to reclaim their German citizenship.
