LBI London board member Dr Charlie Knight represented the Institute at a German Unity Day reception at Canterbury Cathedral on 6 October, hosted by the German Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Susanne Baumann.

The evening brought guests together to celebrate German unity and the ties between Germany and Britain. With the cathedral illuminated after dark and the national anthems sung by the Kent College Sedecim Choir, it offered a welcoming setting for conversation and new connections.

The occasion also provided an opportunity to reflect on the peaceful demands for freedom and democracy made by East Germans in 1989. In her reflections on the celebration, Ambassador Baumann highlighted the importance of learning from history, defending democracy and standing together against division.

Reflecting on the evening, Charlie said:

It was a pleasure to represent LBI London at Canterbury Cathedral and to meet so many people committed to the relationship between Britain and Germany. The evening was a welcome opportunity to reflect on our shared history and the importance of continued dialogue.

We thank Ambassador Baumann for her hospitality and for bringing people together to mark the occasion.
