The Leo Baeck Institute London is pleased to congratulate Professor Neil Gregor, a member of the LBI London Board, on his election as chair of the German History Society for 2026–29.
Professor Gregor was elected at the Society’s annual general meeting at the University of Stirling. He succeeds Professor Mark Hewitson of University College London, who has completed his three-year term.
Professor Gregor is Professor of Modern European History at the University of Southampton, where he has worked since 1994. His research has explored the economic, social and cultural history of twentieth-century Germany. His publications include two prize-winning monographs with Yale University Press and, most recently, The Symphony Concert in Nazi Germany, published by the University of Chicago Press in 2025.
Alongside his academic work, Professor Gregor serves on the academic advisory boards of the Documentation Centre at the Nuremberg Party Rally Grounds and the Leo Baeck Institute London. He has also served on the academic advisory boards of the Wiener Holocaust Library and the German Historical Institute London.
Professor Gregor has a long-standing connection with the German History Society. He was co-editor of German History from 2009 to 2015 and, with Professor Len Scales, was founding co-editor of the Society’s Oxford University Press book series Studies in German History.
On his election, Professor Gregor said:
I’m enormously honoured to be invited to chair this particular society, which has accompanied my own academic work since I was a PhD student and provided a wonderful source of academic community, intellectual stimulation and friendship ever since.
He also paid tribute to his predecessor, Professor Mark Hewitson, and expressed his commitment to ensuring that the Society continues to support PhD students, early-career researchers and established scholars.
