The Leo Baeck Institute warmly wishes Shanah Tovah to all who celebrate. Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the Jewish calendar and a moment for reflection, renewal and hope. We say Shanah Tovah Umetukah – may the year ahead bring peace, growth and sweetness to all.
Please note the Institute will be closed on Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 September in observance of Rosh Hashanah, and Thursday 2 October for Yom Kippur. We send our very best wishes for a meaningful holiday season.
The accompanying image is taken from Dreams of Childhood, a collection of stories for Jewish children by Hermann Schwab, illustrated by Sigismund Freeman. Preserved in our pamphlet collection, it reflects both the cultural imagination and educational values of German-Jewish life. We have created a browser‑viewable flipbook version, which can be explored here: https://lbilondon.ac.uk/flipbooks/dreams-of-childhood/.
Hermann Schwab (1879–1962) was a German-Jewish journalist, writer and community leader. Born in Frankfurt, he chronicled German Orthodox Jewry and Jewish history with care and affection. After emigrating to London in 1934, he continued his work supporting Jewish communities and preserving their heritage. Schwab is remembered for both his historical studies and children’s stories, including Dreams of Childhood, which reflect the culture of German-Jewish life in the early 20th century.
