A German-Jewish New Year Card from a French Chocolate Box

L’shanah tovah u’metukah! To mark the Jewish New Year, we’re sharing a striking piece of nineteenth-century commercial print culture: a chromolithographed advertising card issued by the French chocolate manufacturer Chocolat Poulain, depicting the Jewish New Year.

The image offers a nineteenth-century European reading of ancient biblical life, showing figures sounding the shofar to mark the festival. It’s held in the collection of the Jewish Museum of Switzerland in Basel, catalogued as JMS 1980_7 .

Wishing our whole community a peaceful, healthy and inspiring New Year from all of us at LBI London.
